About Phylis Goldberg
Phylis Goldberg grew up on Long Island in an area called Five Towns. Her parents were among the original founders of Congregation Sons of Israel synagogue in Woodmere; her mother would start the synagogue’s Sisterhood in the family’s living room. Phylis’s childhood, which is the focus of Phylis: Tales of a Jewish Child during the Great Depression, revolved around family life, synagogue activities, and elementary school.
Phylis Goldberg
Phylis Goldberg was a professional editor—a writer’s writer—for many years, editing for such diverse publications as Baby Talk and Billboard magazines. She began to write about her childhood as early as the 1970s, and, after retiring to Sarasota, schlepped two heavy boxes containing her stories from New York City to Florida, where they sat in a closet. A chance conversation between Barry Hymowech, her partner of 40-plus years, and a friend in 2018 led to the stories being published in 2019. Since publication, Phylis: Tales of a Jewish Child during the Great Depression has been named a 2019 President’s Book Award Winner by the Florida Authors & Publishers Association and has been recognized as a Finalist in the Florida Writers Association’s 2019 Royal Palm Literary Awards. Phylis has also been nominated by its publisher, Orange Blossom Publishing, for the National Book Awards.
